MARIAH DOESN'T 'GLITTER'

Mariah Carey's new film "Glitter" flopped big time at the box office. People may have listened to the critics and stayed away, or it could be the current attitude in the country, or it could be that folks just knew it wasn't their kind of movie. Either way, in spite of being booked at over 1200 screens, the film took in a disappointing $2.5 million and didn't even make the top 10. It was the only new movie that week that
opened in wide release. Bruce Snyder, president of domestic distribution for 20th Century Fox, gave this explanation to Reuters: "It's disappointing. With the climate in this country, I don't think I know quite what's going on.'' The president of Exhibitor Relations, Paul Dergarabedian, said folks are still nervous about the recent terrorist attacks. Plus there's a lack of new movies and last Friday night's celebrity telethon kept movie audiences away. (Nearly 60 million people watched the telethon benefiting victims of the attacks.) "There were more stars in that than in any film in the marketplace,'' Dergarabedian told Reuters.
