The Boyz Are Back In Town

   Shaft director John Singleton says he’s going back to the genre that made him a household name. "I’m doing my follow up to Boyz N The Hood," Singleton told Blackflix.com. "I’m going back to South Central Los Angeles and I’m doing this film that I wrote called, Baby Boy."
   Singleton says Baby Boy is a deliberate departure from his commercialized Hollywood successes.
   "Shaft was the first film that I could say everybody was going to go see," Singleton says. "It had a huge mass appeal. But now I really want to go back and do a small film that some people may like and some people may not like."

   Singleton says Baby Boy is an independent film that he’s deeming the most ghetto movie ever made.
   "There’s going to be a lot of unknowns," Singleton says. "I am going to establish a whole new thing, and have a lot new faces in the film."
   Singleton says he feels in terms of black art, the more culture specific of how black something is -- the more universal it becomes – and the more soulful it becomes.
   When Singleton made Boyz N The Hood, he didn’t think that anybody other than black people would go see it. "I just thought it would be this movie that if I just kept it like this, then a young crowd interested in the hip-hop music would go see it," he says. "And it turned out to be a huge success. And that started my career, and now I’m doing all these different films."
   Singleton says Baby Boy is going to be as topical and as racy his Boyz N The Hood. "Some people may love it, some may say, ‘Why in the hell did he do this movie?’ "But that’s my choice as an artist," Singleton says.

   "I don’t think that Marvin Gaye had anybody sitting over him trying to tell him this has to appeal to everybody. But he made albums that everybody loved and listened to."
   If Singleton wasn’t making movies, he says he’d probably be in the music business, "because there you can articulate things -- exactly what you are thinking, what you’re feeling."
   Singleton says because he makes films that cost millions of dollars, he has to think about other parameters, so Baby Boy is going to address everything. "This whole chauvinist thing in hip-hop music where everybody is talking about bitches and hoes. It’s like a ghetto soap opera."
