The People's Choice Awards were presented January 10, 2006, at the Shrine Auditorium and broadcast live on CBS.

Nominees were compiled with the help of market research company Knowledge Networks, which came up with candidates based on television ratings, box-office grosses and album sales. The nominations were then voted on by the People's Choice own production team, editors at Entertainment Weekly, and a special panel of pop culture fans. The pop culture panel consisted of 18- to 54-year-olds. (I guess someone felt the mature, swing vote of millions of baby boomers approaching 60 may have put a geriatric damper on the party.) The top three vote-getters in each category became the nominee finalalists. Winners were determined by the public, who voted via the Internet.

"Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith," the biggest box office hit of 2005, received favorite movie honors and creator George Lucas was on hand to personally thank the public for supporting his six-part "Star Wars" saga over three decades. Lucas, who received his award from Harrison Ford, told the crowd that he has never been a favorite of the critics or studio executives, but that didn’t matter because public support is what really matters most in movie making.

"You are the most important people for any filmmaker," Lucas said in his speech, which was greeted by wild applause. "The reason I make films is for you. The audience rules!"
