Diversity, or lack thereof, has garnered quite a bit of negative attention in Hollywood these past few weeks, but at the 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards it was something to be celebrated.

Idris Elba and daugter Isan Elba

The annual ceremony which took place Saturday evening at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, just two days before America celebrates Black History month, gave acting accolades to all four of the black actors nominated. Idris Elba, who was nominated for three awards received two awards. One for his supporting role in the Netflix film “Beasts of No Nation” and a best actor award for the BBC miniseries “Luther.” Queen Latifah’s stirring biopic on the blues singer “Bessie” earned her a best actor accolade, Uzo Aduba picked up a 2nd consecutive award for her role as Crazy Eyes in the Netflix drama “Orange Is the New Black” and Viola Davis scooped up an award for her ABC Network drama “How To Get Away With Murder.”

“They recognize talent, they recognize craft, with or without color. At the end of the day that is all we want. As actors, we want our excellence and our hard work to be acknowledged,” Davis told Blackflix.

Leonardo DiCaprio

A ceremony where the awards are decided exclusively by actors, the SAG Awards give actors a chance to evaluate their colleagues. Other winners included Leonardo DiCaprio who won the lead actor accolade for his role in “The Revenant,” Brie Larson took the lead actress award for the film “Room” and “Spotlight” beat out “Beasts of No Nation” and “Straight Outta Compton” to receive the best movie ensemble award.

“It’s a nice nod when we give each other love. It feels good,” shared an elated Idris backstage. He also addressed the Oscar snub saying that he was disappointed not to be nominated for an Oscar. “We make movies for the love of it and not for the awards. It’s nice to be nominated and it sucks when you’re not.”

Viola Davis

The telecast which aired live on TNT and TBS also presented comedian Carol Burnett with the SAG Awards Life Achievement honor.
