Im not going to complain.
Fact of the matter is, theres no one to complain to. Certainly not to the MTV or Nintendo generation.
Because I just knew that somehow, someone was going to figure out a way to get PlayStation 2, or a reasonable facsimile, onto the big screen.
Enter "XXX" (pronounced triple X) the 90 minute Mountain Dew commercial (filled with video game action) about extreme sports athlete Xander Cage (Vin Diesel) who has an appetite for stolen computer chips and cars.
Xander is busted by Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson), a National Security Agency chief, after stealing and wrecking a senators Corvette. Hes then recruited by Gibbons as a undercover agent to stop Czech baddies from taking over the world by using biological weapon.
"XXX" borrows so heavily from the James Bond formula --- evil villain, beautiful girl, arsenal loaded car and plenty of explosions, its a homage of sorts. However, Xander is everything James Bond isnt. Hes tough, his head is shaved and hes tattooed everywhere. However, like 007 he does have lame throwaway one-liners.
Director Rob Cohen and producer Neal H. Mortiz, who also made "The Fast and the Furious," are at the helm in this picture, so you know the kind of MTVish action to expect.
"XXX" might be a new genre of espionage thriller, however, Bond fans are quick to point out the real thing is on its way this November.
