Coverage:

If you’re looking for a frightfully good time at the movies first time director James Wan’s gruesome thriller "Saw" is a most satisfying trick or treat. Saw’s tantalizing premise features a madman who like to play sick mind games on his victims whom he has chosen to punish, or to advance the plot of the movie. A forgivable sin, I assure you when you see the ending.

"Saw" stars Danny Glover as a police detective who’s investigating a series of murders where one victims had an hour to work his way through a room full of razor wire and another where a drug addict had to cut a key out of a living person’s stomach to keep from dying herself.

Pretty gruesome stuff, eh? However, the best is yet to come.

The killer’s next victims are a doctor (Cary Elwes) who finds himself chain in a room with a stranger (Leigh Whannell) with the body of a dead man on the floor between them. Through a series of messages and clues from the killer, who by the way never kills anyone directly, the pair are directed to kill the other in order to be released. The rub is there’s a hacksaw left in the room whose blade isn’t sharp enough to cut their chains, but it’s sharp enough to cut through their legs and free them.

Of course a situation ensues where they have to make a choice whether or not to cut off a limb to become free. Wan manages to weave a story that will have the audience guessing up until the end. I don’t suspect Saw will cut its way into the annals of cult horror flicks such as Halloween, but it’s good fun while it last. And it’s good for a jolt or two.
