     PG13
Bottom Line:
     *

Coverage:

The first 45 minutes of this film is deadly. It's a boring yarn where the audience really doesn't know, or care for that matter, what's going on. As for the rest of the film, it's a jumbled mess. And that really is a shame, because Jefferson's story is an important part of black American history.
It's tragic that the story is wrapped in such a poorly constructed movie. The film opens with James Earl Jones telling a reporter about his mother, a Thomas Jefferson slave, and how Jefferson was his father. The movie becomes one long flashback, and we see James Earl Jones briefly once more.
If you can sit through the movie, we see Jefferson tell the French how all men are equal, but he doesn't tell them how he has slaves back in the United States, some of which are his own children.
