Former BET Award host Kevin Hart beat out Don Cheadle, Denzel Washington and Idris Elba to win the Best Actor accolade for his role in the movie “Think Like a Man.”
Hart, who made his acting debut in the ensemble relationship comedy took to the stage and joked that he was a better actor than Denzel and Don and far prettier than Idris.
Other winners at this annual show which was hosted by Samuel Jackson and held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles include Viola Davis, who won the best actress accolade and Beyonce who received the best female R&B award.
An annual award show which has been held since 2001 and celebrates African Americans and other minorities in all fields of entertainment, there were ongoing tributes to lost icons Don Cornelius, Donna Summer and Dick Clark, although the most anticipated moment of the night was a tribute to Whitney Houston, which was introduced by Mariah Carey.
“We miss your laughter and we will always love your music as you are an inspiration to all us,” said a tearful Carey before Brandy, Monica, Chaka Khan, Houston’s brother Gary and mother Cissy all individually sang some of Houston’s hits in her honor.
With performances by Melanie Fiona, Chris Brown, Kanye West and D’Angelo, Black Entertainment Television’s chairman and CEO Debra Lee presented Al Sharpton with his Humanitarian Award which he dedicated to his mother. Frankie Beverly featuring Maze were honored with the lifetime achievement award were serenaded with performances by Tyrese, Faith Evans and Joe.
Presenters included Cedric the Entertainer, Megan Good, Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington.
