Awards were presented in 41 categories and included three special recognitions: the Chairmans Award to "The Boondocks" comic strip creator Aaron McGruder, the Presidents Award to National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice and the Hall of Fame Award to performing artist and rock n roll legend Little Richard.
Winners were selected by ballots received from the national readership of the NAACPs Crisis magazine and the leadership of the NAACPs 2,000 branches. The accounting firm of Thompson, Cobb, Bazilio & Associates, PC tabulated the final ballots.
The annual NAACP Image Awards are given to those who strive for the portrayal of positive images and meaningful opportunities for African-Americans in motion pictures, television, literature and recording. Founded in 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nations oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its half-million adult and youth members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.
